Ri Bhoi, Meghalaya – January 7, 2025
In a significant step towards promoting sustainable agricultural practices, a one-day workshop on “Vermicomposting: Techniques and Applications for Sustainable Farming” was successfully conducted under the Integrated Value Chain Enhancement for Environmental Sustainability (IVCEES) Project. Organized by the School of Livelihood and Rural Development (SLRD) in collaboration with ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ATARI), Zone VII, and KVK Ri Bhoi, Meghalaya, the event aimed to equip farmers with scientific knowledge and practical skills in vermicomposting. The program was supported by funding from UNDP and supported by TERI.
The workshop brought together around 45 farmers and Board of Directors (BODs) from two Farmer Producer Organizations – Western Ri Bhoi Farmers Producers Cooperative Society and Jirang Organic Agro Farmers Producer Company Limited from Jirang Block, Ri Bhoi, Meghalaya. The objective was to enhance farmers’ capabilities in organic waste management and soil fertility improvement through vermicomposting techniques.

Workshop Highlights:
- Vermicomposting Techniques – Understanding the process, best management practices, and troubleshooting common challenges.
- Nutrient Management & Soil Health – The role of vermicompost in organic farming, cost-benefit analysis,
and its impact on crop yield. - Hands-on Training & Field Visit – Practical exposure to vermicompost preparation at a production site.
- Market Linkages & Branding – Insights into marketing, branding, and selling vermicompost in local and
regional markets.
The sessions were led by Dr. Popiha Bordoloi, Subject Matter Specialist (Soil Science) at KVK Ri Bhoi, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya. Her expert guidance helped farmers understand organic soil management techniques and the importance of vermicompost in enhancing soil health.
Mr. Sandesh Kumar from SLRD was coordinating the program, engaging with the farmers and supporting knowledge-sharing initiatives. The workshop concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony, recognizing the active participation and commitment of the farmers towards sustainable agriculture. Representatives from SLRD and KVK Ri Bhoi reaffirmed their dedication to empowering farmers through such initiatives, ensuring long-term benefits for the farming community.
Ms. Anubha Baluapuri, Director, School of Livelihood and Rural Development, highlighted the importance of vermicomposting in sustainable farming practices, stating, “Empowering farmers with knowledge and hands-on training in organic techniques like vermicomposting is a crucial step towards environmental sustainability and economic self-reliance. This initiative reflects our commitment to strengthening the agricultural value chain while promoting regenerative farming practices in Meghalaya.”
This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts under the IVCEES Project to promote environmentally sustainable and economically viable farming techniques for the benefit of farmers in Meghalaya. By integrating traditional knowledge with scientific advancements, such workshops pave the way for a greener, more resilient agricultural landscape.
